Patreon is similar to Kickstarter or other crowd funding websites in that creators go to the public to get funds for whatever they’re trying to get made. Where Patreon differs, however, is that instead of collecting funds for one project Patreon allows people to fund creators monthly on long-term projects like comic series, continuous videos, writings, regular artwork, and other things. This isn’t a one-time payment but monthly payments, also with rewards.
Since this is a new avenue for creative types (and one I may well try myself with all my articles, videos, and comics, I want to point to Patreon projects that I want to see supported and continue coming out on a regular or semi-regular basis, depending on the creator’s time.
This installment takes us to Lean Into Artcast, the podcast extension of comic creation gathering and education site Lean Into Art. And long time BW readers may recognize one of the names attached to it.
Lean Into Artcast is the spiritual successor to Art & Story right down to one of the co-hosts, BW Virtual Mentor Jerzy Drozd. This time he teams with Rob Stenzinger, a cartoonist and video game creator, to examine all aspects of comic creation, both in approaching the craft, promoting the craft, and monetizing the craft. For those not familiar, Drozd is a cartoonist whose name pops up quite often here at the Spotlight since he, along with Mark Rudolph and later Keven Cross, is part of the reason I decided to try the whole storytelling thing for real instead of something in a notebook.
For an example of how the Lean Into Artcast works here is the latest episode. Fittingly it discusses Patreon, making a good introduction into the service. This won’t be the last time I discuss Patreon since, like the one-time crowd funding projects, some good, BW-approved (not just me-approved) projects are bound to show up again.
Lean Into Artcast posts usually every other Thursday and through Google+ you can even ask questions during the live broadcast. They also have a newsletter with bonus “Extra Lean” podcasts. If all this sounds good to you, check out their Patreon page. They don’t currently have any special offerings just yet so it’s easy to support. Remember this only goes to the podcast and not their classes.
By the way, if I do a Patreon what could I offer based on what I do here at the Spotlight that might look good to you guys? I have a few of my own ideas, but I need time to put stuff together.
