The Transformers #41
Marvel Comics (June, 1988)
“Totaled!” WRITER: Bob Budiansky PENCILER: José Delbo INKER: Danny Bulanadi COLORIST: Nel Yomtov LETTERER: Bill Oakley EDITOR: Don Daley
Without the resources to rebuild Optimus Prime, the crew of the Steelhaven try out one last source in the area, namely the resources of the Ark. However, Grimlock doesn’t believe in group leaders and demands Fortress Maximus, still recovering from last issue’s injuries, fight him for command of the Autobots. Luckily, Goldbug is reunited with Blaster and convinces him to take Max’s place if only for his own revenge against Grimlock. As they fight, the Decepticons use the opportunity to reclaim their lost comrades and decimate the Ark before the duo put aside their differences and send the ‘Cons running. Meanwhile, Fortress Maximus sent Goldbug back to the Steelhaven with three other Autobots to head to Optimus’ last chance…Nebulos!
What they got right: This battle was a long time coming and although it ended in a draw events demanded it. Fortress Maximus/Spike is smart enough to leave guards behind on his ship while Grimlock’s ego demands everyone come out. It’s not just narrative convenience but shows the difference between the two.
What they got wrong: This is Yomtov short-cutting at it’s weakest. With so many Transformers on panel at one time I’m not surprised he broke out the “color everyone unnecessary the same color” game he usually does and it’s disappointing because the art is quite good.
Recommendation: A good showing that’s worth looking at if you’re considering checking out Budiansky’s run.
