The Christian Crusader: Web Of Lies…Chains Of Sin
CC Comics (September, 1993)
WRITER/ARTIST: John Celestri
Za-Tin uses micro transmitters, a boy named Chuck who wants to be a devil ninja, and his pet “ballafur” named Little Cin to corrupt Jason and Laura. When they’ve been convinced to sin and do bad things like stealing and lying, he traps them in webs and chains formed from their sins. However, the power of God not only saves the kids but saves Chuck as well when Za-Tin turns on the kid.
What they got right: For Christian kids this is a good story. The focus this issue is less on the Crusader as it is his adopted children but its shows how Satan turns people from what they know is right, with “tempter transmitters” standing in for the demons that speak into their ear (not preaching in this review; this is what many Christians believe) and lead them from God. Also, God forgives Chuck after Za-Tin does the typical evil thing of betraying him instead of turning him into one of his minions like the captain from issue #1.
What they got wrong: Sir David encounters a group of people who turned to God and one of them is a former worker in Za-Tin’s R&D department. When Naomi and Mark tell Sir David about Jason and Laura’s actions the man knows it was the transmitters. I don’t have a problem with that, but why not mention it then instead of just before the kids arrive to warn about what their friends have been talked into? Instead he just brings it up out of nowhere. It’s a mild pacing issue but considering how well this installment was done it stands out.
Recommendation: A fun superhero Christian comic with a Saturday morning cartoon feel. If that sounds like your or your kids’ thing, I recommend it.
