Darien Connors lost his mother before he was old enough to know her. Then his astronaut father was killed on a spaceflight to Mars that basically killed the US manned space program. Now in high school, the local bully is more than willing to kill him because his ex appears to be getting cozy with Darien. However, he will learn something amazing about his parents and himself.

What they got right: Hey, the school jock bully isn’t the darling of the school because he’s on the team. Nice. Otherwise, the bullied kid who learns he’s actually something special isn’t new but by combining science fiction and magic (fantasy) there’s some potential here. Darien is a decent enough kid and I can relate to him as a former bully victim (although mine went for psychological torment rather than the physical stuff you usually see in fictional bullies). This could be interesting wish-fulfillment for young readers.

What they got wrong: IF this is an “all-ages” title. There’s a promo for a zombie comic with some guy in a skull mask decapitating a zombie and another comic that doesn’t look like an “all-ages” title. None of them are really gory or anything but if this isn’t all-ages (like that Quest For Tomorrow comic) I’ll feel like an opportunity was missed.

Recommendation: A decent intro to the main character. I’d give it a look at least. I may check into the next issue to see what happens.

This is a total bias choice. I wish I had a teacher scare off my bullies back in the day.
