Godzilla #3
Marvel Comics (October, 1977)
“A Tale Of Two Saviors” WRITER: Doug Moench ARTIST: Herbe Trimpe INKER: Tony Dezuniga COLORIST: Don Warfield (still black & white reprint) LETTERER: Wohl E. Wantanabe EDITOR: Archie Goodwin
Godzilla’s walking tour of America takes him to San Francisco where it’s unclear what kind of damage he would have done were it not for SHIELD’s “Godzilla Squad” and the Champions (represented by Black Widow, Hercules, Iceman, and Angel) fighting each other over the right to take down Godzilla. Meanwhile Jimmy Woo takes Takiguchi to Tony Stark in Detroit and the doctor’s assistant to lunch.
What they got right: Being set in the Marvel Universe, it was only a matter of time before superheroes got involved. The fight was well done, with the egos of Dum Dum and the Champions clashing. I have no complaints.
What they got wrong: I would say “let’s get some monster fighting going already, which is why we bought a Godzilla comic” but we’re getting our first monster next issue and I’m fine with that.
Recommendation: The third issue isn’t all that spectacular but it’s not bad, either. Still, unless you like the Champions or want a complete run of Godzilla comics there’s nothing to rush around for here.
