Ultraman #2
Harvey/Ultracomics (August, 1993)
“Revenge Of Gudis” part 2: Rebirth WRITER: Dwayne McDuffie PENCILER: Ernie Colon INKER: Alfredo Alcala COLORIST: Cydene Nee & Jason Doerck COVER ART: Ken Steacy LETTERER: Dan NakrosisUltraman returns to Earth and finds the crushed Jack Shindo, then remerges with him to save his life. The duo then heads to the Moon, where Ultraman has kept some of the monsters and criminals like a prison. Unfortunately, Ultraman can’t stop them all before reverting to Jack, leaving the pilot to the not-so-tender mercies of Gudis and the other monsters.
What they got right: I’ll show you a sample of the excellent fighting for tonight’s Friday Night Fight. I like the monster designs, but I haven’t watch Towards The Future is so long that I don’t remember if any of them were on the show.
What they got wrong: I DO remember, though, that according to the show this Ultraman could only retain his Ultra form for three minutes because of the pollution in Earth’s atmosphere. The narrator brought that up nearly every episode. They’re fighting on the moon! This shouldn’t be a problem, although we apparently didn’t see when Jack grabbed a spacesuit after activating the pendant that allows him to switch with Ultraman. Not sure how he had time to change, either.
Recommendation: I wish I had issue #3 to see how the miniseries ended, but I like the first two issues enough to recommend them. Next week we’ll start on the few issues of the ongoing I have.
