Fury Of Firestorm #1

How many people are in Ronnie’s head?

Fury Of Firestorm #1

“Day Of The Bison”
WRITER/CO-CREATOR: Gerry Conway

“FIRESTORM” CO-CREATOR: Al Milgrom

After a reintroduction (between the original miniseries and this ongoing he had appeared in The Flash as a back-up feature) we get to our newest adventure. Ronnie’s teacher, John Ravenhair, is a Native American who has no problem with the modern world. His grandfather, however, has a hatred for the white man and uses the magic of the defunct Bison cult to try and take over John’s mind. However, he chose Central Park and some muggers accidentally (maybe) kill the old man. The result turns John Ravenhair into Black Bison. Upset that Senator Reilly displayed Bison cult artifacts at a museum, he decides to get some payback, involving his daughter, Lorraine.

What they got right: Putting Firestorm back in his own comic? They also do a good job getting new readers (who missed either the miniseries, the back-ups, or both) up to speed rather quickly.

What they got wrong: Keeping Cliff Carmichael? I really hate that guy. I do wonder if this is going to get political, though between Reilly declaring himself a liberal and the white man discussing the internal debate among Native Americans as to whether or not to join the modern age or whatever. I’m half-tired when I’m writing this review to get it up on time so I hope that made sense and actually got my point across. And full-disclosure, I’m an admitted conservative, but if I’m going to complain about politics in my comics I need to do so fairly, at least from a critical standpoint. Personally I’m not bothered. Yet.

Recommendation: Firestorm returns and it’s good to see the real Firestorm do what he (or they if you will) does best. Pick this one up.
