Batman 66 Meets The Green Hornet #1

Yep, it’s the 60s.

Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #1

DC Comics/Dynamite (August, 2014)

“On The Wrong Track”
WRITERS: Kevin Smith & Ralph Garman
ARTIST: Ty Templeton
COLORIST: Tony Avina
SELECTED COVER ART: Alex Ross
LETTERER: Wes Abbott
ASSISTANT EDITOR: Aniz Ansari
SENIOR EDITOR: Jim Chadwick

As Dick Grayson goes on a date, Bruce Wayne travels with a museum shipment going to the city where the Green Hornet operates, which is why Bruce’s old friend Britt Reed is also on the train with his valet, Kato. Sure enough someone tries to steal the artifacts, Colonel Gumm, now self-promoted to General after an accident fused an experimental batch of his special adhesive to his face and hands and he’s prepared to face his old nemeses again.

What they got right: The two hero groups have “teamed” up before since both shows had the same producers. (I put teamed in quotation marks because only a select few knows the Green Hornet and his mysterious assistant…although in this issue Kato tries to come up with his own nickname…are actually crimefighters since they pretend to be criminals as part of a–sorry, I have to–sting operation.) It makes sense that the writers would also bring back their lone mutual foe, Colonel Gumm.

What they got wrong: I’m going to assume they couldn’t get the likeness rights for the late Roger C. Carmel (although we do see part of his face during the flashback) which explains the accident. I’m just glad this wasn’t passed off as Clayface 66, but I don’t seen the need for the promotion out of story.

Recommendation: I was prepared to not like this comic being that Kevin Smith’s style kind of clashes with my preference but this first issue was rather good, even if nothing stood out for Best Scene. I say grab this one.
