Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
Two weeks ago we were introduced to who I’m sure is the villain in a moment that would have worked as the beginning of a TV episode. Well, the credits have rolled so it’s time to see what our heroes are doing.
Chapter 2: The Black Stallion
So the Black wouldn’t mind finding a mare of his own. That should make dePluminel’s mission easier, since Black is having about as much luck with the ladies that I do. I have been single for years. Alec and his horse are vacationing and training in Florida for the winter before the next racing season, but today’s their “day off”. It’s mostly to establish (likely for new readers, which I am right now) Alec and his relationship with the Black. They decide to go for a ride in a different direction than they have been and without the bit and saddle. Not surprisingly it’s better to ride bareback, as long as you can stay on. Something is drawing them to the Everglades, and Farley makes it sound rather ominous.
One question I want to ask horse fans. Can a horse lie on his/her back with their legs extended out? I’ve seen horses on television shows and movies and I’ve only seen them lying on the side, not on their back. This is the second time Farley described a horse doing something I’d only expect from a human but not a horse. It just reads a bit off to me.
Still, a good introduction to new reader for Black and Alec. From the title it looks like taking it easy will continue. Unless it’s another horse-related term I’m missing.
