If you’re part of the gaming culture you should know the name Ralph Baer. He was the creator of the first home console, the “brown box” that became the first Odyssey home game system. Often referred to as the father of video games, Baer also created Simon, the game where you press the right colors in the right row, which has also been duplicated in video games from freeware to those things at bars (do they still have those?). Baer passed away Saturday at 92 years old. But his contribution to entertainment will be forever felt from Pac-Land to the Mushroom Kingdom to the cities of Rapture and Columbia.
In 2008 VGX TV1 produced a documentary of Baer’s life, from escaping Germany as Hitler rose to power to his service in the US military to his gaming legacy. It includes an interview with Baer, who was always happy to discuss his part in creating a beloved media format.
