Godzilla #13
Dark Horse (June, 1996)
“Turf War” WRITER: Randy Stradley PENCILER: Scott Kolins INKER: Barb Kaalberg COLORIST: Tom Roberts COVER ART: Bob Eggleton LETTERER: Clem Robins DESIGN: Mark Cox EDITORS: Randy Stradley & Scott Allie
G-Force investigates a monster attack. Everyone except Burton is sure it’s a sign Godzilla is back, and Burton is right in thinking it’s a new monster, which they dub Burtannus in his honor. Godzilla arrives and our heroes think he’s come to defend his “turf”. However, Kino and Také discover Burtannus is a mother protecting her babies, and even Godzilla knows better than to mess with that.
What they got right: Stradley’s back on writing duties and I like how he referenced his old comic as part of showing not every monster comes from outer space. And it’s not a story that needed multiple issues. One was enough, and that’s nice to see since everyone wants to write multi-issue epics lately. Burtannus is also a good monster, and it’s interesting to see even Godzilla knows when to give up the fight. And naming Burtannus makes more sense than most kaiju names in the Godzilla multiverse, including US dubs (ex: the giant spider Kumonga was called Spiga in one English dub).
What they got wrong: What happened to Kate, Také’s reporter girlfriend? Is she ever going to show up in the comics again?
Recommendation: After the disappointing time-travel story arc it’s nice to have a Godzilla comic I can recommend and it’s a darn good one.
