In the Ninja Ranger story, Kimberly and Aiesha are out shopping and (as usual) Kim is spending way too much. After dealing with a pushy clothes shopper, Zedd turns everyone in the clothing store into clothes-eating monsters…what? And they’re defeated when the Yellow Ranger shows them the bill, so they spit the clothes out and return to normal? I get the message they were going for, but it really doesn’t work when you’re finding the situation ridiculous.
The VR Trooper story has a different reason to miss the mark; it’s too short. Ryan and JB take part in a team martial arts tournament…that has Ryan giving a kick no human leg should be able to do to some guy’s head. They don’t do MMA, artists! Anyway, they win the fight but thanks to forgetting to send in the fee (which you’d think would be checked BEFORE they competed in the preliminaries) they’re disqualified. The two blame each other and Grimlord tries to drive a stronger wedge between the two friends, until he ends up needing their help against Smorgaslord, a would-be usurper who wants to eat reality. The problem is Ryan and JB put their differences aside way too fast because the story and mission require it. Again, it’s a good idea that doesn’t reach it’s potential.
So this is another comic I can’t recommend. It’s too bad because I like VR Troopers and the “Ninja Ranger” concept. Too bad the comic never lives up to either.
