Darkhawk #5

Marvel (July, 1991)

“Fury From Beyond”
WRITER: Danny Fingeroth
PENCILER: Mike Manley
INKER: Ricardo Villagran
COLORISTS: Joe Rosas & Kevin Tinsley
LETTERER: Joe Rosen
EDITOR: Howard Mackie

Chris finally looks at his face underneath the Darkhawk helmet and what he finds scares him so much he wrecks his room. Going out to the amusement park to find St. Johnny, the bum that first mentioned the name “Darkhawk” (who is really no help), Chris sees an assassin drive off after being spotted. The next day the Powell family takes in the museum for a shot at normalcy, but the assassin tries again. Chris recognizes him from the car and gets him first but is shot in the leg. He gives chase anyway and when out of sight becomes Darkhawk. His pursuit is interrupted by a portal spitting out Portal, a Native American who is wearing armor similar to Darkhawk’s. Portal thinks Darkhawk is another of his enemies and tries attacking our hero, who just manages to take him out and capture the assassin. Becoming Chris again he finds the leg wound is still there, showing that while Darkhawk is repaired during the switch, Chris is not. Chris, still questioning whether or not to keep the amulet, decides he has to stop Bazin, meaning Darkhawk is here to stay.

What they got right: A bit more of the mystery that is Darkhawk is revealed. Portal makes a good debut (although he showed up in a previous issue of Avengers). Even the Guardsmen who take Portal away think Darkhawk is a hero. Portal’s armor design is pretty cool.

What they got wrong: Can Chris get rid of that mullet soon? Seriously, that’s all I have.

Recommendation: This is a pretty good issue, showing that they are going to address the mysteries surrounding Darkhawk. Give this a look.
