Gigantor #7
Antarctic Press (August, 2000)
“Struggle At The South Pole!” ADAPTATION/ARTIST: Ben Dunn EDITOR: Doug Dlin
Doctor Katzmeow has claimed Antarctica for himself and is attacking any bases on the continent. Jimmy, Inspector Blooper, Dick Strong, and Bob Brilliant have been called in with Gigantor to stop his plans. While Katzmeow’s forces shoot the plane down, Bob has the surviving parts of the plane turned into a sled for Gigantor to pull (since it’s too cold to have Gigantor fly them to the base), but they’re attacked by robot penguins and the enemy’s ground forces. Gigantor sends them away, but Dick knocks one of them out and takes his uniform to infiltrate the enemy base, without alerting the others what he’s doing. At the base Dick sees their spritzer tanks at the underground base (which has a heated swimming pool among other pleasantries). Meanwhile, Katzmeow and his head aides plot to take out Gigantor.
What they got right: This is an adaptation of the first half of the first episode, which bears the same title. Dunn actually improves on the episode in some ways (like Jimmy isn’t just sitting at a desk when Blooper comes in but is cleaning Gigantor…in other words actually doing something interesting) and he adds an extra potential reason for Katzmeow to want to seize Antarctica that wasn’t in the episode when Bob is explaining the benefits of the polar continent. While the art is more simplistic, like the show, the character models as designed thus far are the ones we’ve seen in previous issues.
What they got wrong: I wonder if that or money issues is why this issue is in black and white as opposed to color. While the art isn’t bad there is a huge step down from the previous story arc. Also, it’s an episode adaptation when they’ve had original stories up to this point.
Recommendation: Later we’ll see the second half of episode one’s adaptation but it’s off to a good start, and no new characters or homage heavy cameos. It’s worth a look.
