Steel #5
DC Comics (June, 1994)
“Retaliation” WRITER/CO-CREATOR: Louise Simonson PENCILER: Chris Batista INKER: Rick Faber COLORIST: Gina Going LETTERER: Pat Brosseau EDITOR: Frank Pittarese CO-CREATOR: Jon BogdanoveNatasha is hit by a car but Steel is able to get her to a hospital. Someone is now targeting the Irons family and Jem learns it’s Cowboy, the leader of his gang, under orders from Amalgam (not to be confused with the Amalgam universe). Using Tar, Jem goes after Cowboy but Steel arrives to both save Jem and bring in Cowboy. In his anger, Jem puts all the blame on John, because Ameritek is using his family as revenge for taking out the main offices. Steel decides it’s time to take down the Colonel, the man behind Ameritek, once and for all. However, in Metropolis, Superman meets Our friend from last week’s Hardware review, deliveryman Fred Benson, who ends up traveling universes even when he’s hit by a car, only this time something is there between realities.
What they got right: This makes me more curious about “Worlds Collide” (not to be confused with the Sonic/Mega Man teamup from Archie Comics) than Hardware did. The stakes are getting raised for Steel. Too bad “Worlds Collide” will put his vengeance on hold. Steel does a good job defending himself while acknowledging the parts Jem was right on.
What they got wrong: I want to say it’s good set up, but as I said, “Worlds Collide” will mess up this storyline as the Milestone Universe invades the Superman titles.
Recommendation: A good story but they won’t be allowed to do what they could have thanks to being sucked into a crossover event. Still, worth a look.
