Transformers: The War Within – The Dark Ages #5
Dreamwave (February, 2004)
WRITER: Simon Furman PENCILER: Andrew Wildman INKERS: Erik Sander & Rob Armstrong COLORISTS: Alan Wang & Ramil Sunga LETTERER: Ben LeeThe Fallen succeeds in kicking Grimlock’s butt (that makes me happy) and drags him and Jetfire to the Well Of All-Sparks, sending Bludgeon, Mindwipe, and Bugly after the third Transformer he needs, Hot Spot. But Shockwave may be down but not out. Worried about Defensor losing control, Hot Spot refuses to remerge, and the other Protectobots are taken down. Meanwhile, the other Autobots start piecing together what Jetfire learned but are interrupted when the Fallen comes for the final piece, the experimental triple-changer Blitzwing. With all four components he needs, the Fallen begins the Unbinding, which will break the seal of Primus.
What they got right: I’m willing to admit when something works, and Furman does a good job of setting up the fact that the fan is coated without looking ridiculous. Sure, Grimlock is overpowered but that’s the norm for Furman so if he went down like a punk against the Fallen I would have been overjoyed but it would have made the Fallen overpowered.
What they got wrong: I hope the next issue explains why these four Transformers were needed for this Unbinding (which from what context I can get from Fallen’s limited explanation has something to do with summoning Unicron). I’m not getting the reasoning here. Besides, Blitzwing just comes out of nowhere, just showing up in the Autobot prison and we’re told he’s some experiment but nothing about being a triple-changer, which I know he is only because I grew up with the toys and original show.
Recommendation: One decent issue does not make a good miniseries. There’s still things I don’t like about the previous issues that won’t let me recommend picking this up.
