Flash #92
DC Comics (July, 1994)
“Reckless Youth part 1: “Speed Kills” WRITER: Mark Waid PENCILER: Mike Wieringo INKER: Jose Marzan, Jr. COLORIST: Gina Going LETTERER: Gasper ASSISTANT EDITOR: Ruben Diaz EDITOR: Brian Augustyn
Linda is investigating a snake cult and Wally learns that cult sent her a death threat. However, finding them takes a back seat for the Flash when Iris arrives from the future to seek his help. Before Barry died he met up with Iris in the future and they had two kids before he died in the Crisis. One of those kids gave birth to a son named Bart, who has all of Barry’s speed but none of his stopping. Earthgov still wanted him to create their own hero but Iris was able to escape with him into the past but lost him in the timestream. Luckily Bart arrived in the 20th Century intact, but having grown up in a virtual reality and unable to put the breaks on his superspeed (which is aging him), Wally still has to find him…and Bart attacks Flash! Meanwhile, we learn who is behind the snake cult–namely Kobra!
What they got right: In case you haven’t guessed this is the debut of the future Impulse and it’s set up well enough with Waid not realizing the impact Bart Allen would make in the DCU and with the fans. There are some interesting ideas to work with.
What they got wrong: I don’t know about combining this story with the Kobra tale. Unless this is setting up events for after this storyline or to help make Bart’s transition into Impulse I personally would have rather then stuck to one story or the other.
Recommendation: It’s worth getting if only because of the significance in DC history. Beyond that I would have to get the rest of the story arc for a full decision but what we have isn’t a bad start.
