There was a storyline in which (long story short) a "clone" of Superman made of sand walked the Earth. Originally presented pre-Crisis the so-called "Sand Superman" may have returned post-Crisis, and according to Bleeding Cool's D.B. Hughes, may have been an out for the Lois/Clark relationship and the Death Of Superman storyline. I wouldn't put it past them, frankly.
