The full story is learned. Zorenth was the assistant to Vilia (aka Smiley), who was trying to create a plant that would satisfy the taste buds of all species. Instead they found Savorium and Smiley was the first victim. Zorenth saw a way to end war by giving the Savorium-fed animals to the dregs of society (and of course blamed all meat-eaters for war) to turn them into Smilers. Then unscrupulous types started using Smilers as cheap labor, so Zorenth created the caretaker virus for droids. Our heroes refuses to go along with a plan to end free will just to end war, especially since Zorenth decides vegetarians will rule the galaxy once his plan is complete. Then Craw attacks them, still determined to have Smiley and the Savorium. In the end Smiley sacrifices himself to destroy the Savorium, the last remnants of which is the secret ingredient in Craw’s soup. The Droids make their getaway at Zorenth’s instruction.
What they got right: Nice little twist there, as we see how crazed Zorenth has become for the sake of his vision. And Craw is now dealt with as well.
What they got wrong: I’m with Threepio. If Smiley is supposed to be gone, where did he get the mental capacity for this sacrifice, even showing a moment of sadness?
Recommendation: A good end to the story arc, but while the series is done there is one more Droids comic in my collection, which we’ll see next week.
