Super Mario Bros #3

The inspiration for Super Mario World’s cape? Probably not.

Super Mario Brothers #3

Valiant (1990?–there’s no indicia in this book)

Bill Valley, Mark McClellan, George Wildman, P. Zorito

“Bedtime For Drain-head”

Jade, Kingman Huie

“Love Flounders”

Ken Lopez, The Gradations

I wonder if the reason I want to get these last two comics is out is in part due to the terrible way of giving credits the Nintendo comics had.

The first story is almost fun. After a binge of reading his favorite comic book, Dirk Drain-head, Mario falls asleep just as Luigi tells him Koopa has kidnapped Toad. Why did Koopa kidnap Toad? I don’t really know. It’s not like he appears to be leading anyone into a trap. At any rate, Mario is sleepwalking, believing himself to BE Dirk Drain-head off to rescue his sidekick, Snakey. Some fun bits but as a whole it’s not as strong as I would have liked.

The other story is kind of lame, too, but it does use the frog suit from Super Mario Brothers 3, the only other power from that game we’ve seen since the raccoon tail from that one Adventures Of The Super Mario Brothers comic. (And I just noticed that it’s the same promo art from the cover of the regular Super Mario Brothers #1 I’ve already reviewed. That’s lazy, Valiant. You’re better than that!) Mario is forced to miss the “bowling for pasta” tournament where the bowling ball is a giant meatball ({shrugs}) to get cereal fruit for the Princess in a dangerous area. That danger comes from Stanley the Talking Fish, who uses Mario and his frog suit to get Big Bertha off his hands so he can date a jellyfish named Smookers. (And yes, Mario makes that joke some of you older readers are thinking.) It’s a very weak story which is just to make Stanley look bad and do something weird with one of the enemies from the water levels of SMB 3.

Overall this really isn’t that great a comic. None of them have been. And we have one more in the noon posting that is a little confusing. I’ll explain later and then I’m done with this series as I don’t see me picking up any more issues in the future.
