Skystalker, pretending to be Shockwave, sends the larger Decepticons into a battle with the Autobots, hoping for a slaughter on both sides. Big Daddy’s group seeks Countdown’s help, and he and Groundshaker join the group to rescue the Micromasters. Countdown and Skystalker fight while the other Micromasters put aside their affiliations to join up and stop the battle between the larger bots. Tired of war, Maximus decides to quit while Big Daddy tells off Countdown when he worries about “losing control” of this new Micromaster alliance, and he too decides to go off on his own to find another way.
What they got right: Umm….Fortress Maximus was in character. That’s…something.
What they got wrong: When you listen to Countdown and Skystalker banter about previous encounters you realize there’s a story there that is missing, and maybe we should have seen that one first. You don’t get a full story from the profiles, guys. The battle is as muddled as the Bay movies and I can barely tell who is whom thanks to the dark coloring. And since I’ve never known what the Micromaster’s full story is (we do learn that there was some joint training project but Shockwave talked a few into the Decepticon side) I still have no reason to care about any of these characters. It’s like jumping ahead from a more interesting story with this miniseries.
Recommendation: I remember enjoying their run in Generation One, the series that will be starting next week with a preview issue (although their run won’t start for a while yet) but this miniseries I remember not liking and I still don’t. And outside of the Golden Disk being used in the profile books there really isn’t anything here you need for the main series. Unless you want a complete library I’d skip this miniseries.
