James Harrington posted a Valentine’s Day article about one particular trope in romance movies that annoys him, and it gets to me as well. Look, I have nothing against the underdog, the misunderstood rebel, or whatever getting the girl. But far too often it’s at the expense of the guy she was going to marry. But you don’t feel sorry for him, let’s make him evil. Or you know, try something different. Maybe the underdog rebel wakes the both of them up and then have a better relationship. Or does that only happen in those late-night movies you only watch when you can’t sleep and want to see boobies?
