Why did I make the switch to digital, and does this mean I’m abandoning paper?

It’s good that you’re going to do a balance between digital art and paper art. The paper art is your roots in the world of creation. Never fully abandon it. Yes, I do admit that the digital art is fine. I saw that for myself when you allowed me to try drawing my old cat Rascal by using the tablet. As for your dental consultation on the 16th, that means decisions will be made, but your actual dental procedure likely won’t happen until after Thanksgiving (week of Nov. 27). No dentist will do a dental procedure just before Thanksgiving due to wanting folks to enjoy eating their Thanksgiving meals. So you should have most of the month to participate in November’s Art Soundoff. You might even have the whole month to participate in it if the actual procedure ends up being scheduled for early December.
