I would link to the actual poster but every attempt to bring up his webpage sends me back to my Tumblr dashboard so I had to link to my own Tumblr. Apparently there were some rumors going about connecting a horrible occurrence in Tasmania long ago with the Tasmanian Devil of Looney Tunes fame, declaring his depiction to be racist. (Because everything’s racist nowadays.) However, one Tumblr user took the opportunity to set the record straight. Yes, what happened in that country was evil and wrong but it has no connection to the spinning mumbler.

The Tasmanian Devil is a real animal that lives on the Australian island of Tasmania. So the cartoon character is clearly based on this Australian animal. It has nothing to do with the Native Tasmanian people. Yes, there was a genocide that killed most of the Native Tasmanian people. There are no more full blooded Native Tasmanians, however, there are a few thousand part-Native Tasmanian people still living on Flinders Island (a small island off the coast of Tasmania) and in other parts of the larger island of Tasmania. These part-Native Tasmanian people also have European ancestry (British, Irish, etc.) and some of them even also have Maori ancestry (the native peoples of New Zealand). These part-Native Tasmanian people still practice their traditions and culture on Flinders Island and Tasmania.

The proper name for Native Tasmanians is Palawa. On a side note, there used to be a Tasmanian Tiger (looked more like a dog) on the island of Tasmania. Supposedly, the Tasmanian Tiger is extinct, however, there have been recent sightings of this creature. Travel Channel’s Expedition Unknown show will be in Tasmania next week with host Josh Gates searching for this elusive critter. The Tasmanian Tiger is kind of like the Bigfoot of Tasmania! (and there have been Bigfoot type sightings on the actual continent of Australia).
