A flare attack on Oa forces John and the other Green Lanterns to speed up the swearing in ceremony for new Lantern yet to be assigned a sector. They’re contacted by Lantern G’newmann, warning that Sinestro is working with the Weaponeers of Quad to attack the Lanterns. Going to a planet that was the target of another flare the Lanterns, including G’newmann’s scatterbrained nephew cadet G’nort, learn that the Lantern is actually working with Sinestro–or was until the inevitable betrayal once he served Sinestro’s purpose. It’s G’nort who manages to trick Sinestro and frees his comrades while reinforcements stop Sinestro’s final attack. For his quick thinking G’nort is given his uncle’s old sector to patrol.
What they got right: As a Green Lantern story it works rather well. Each of the focal characters are given a chance to display their personalities, the action is good, and John is right to speed the swearing in since the cadets were going to become full Green Lanterns anyway.
What they got wrong: Did they know this was the last issue when this story was chosen? If so it’s a terrible story to end the series on since the only appearance by the League is Wonder Woman beating Mister Terrific, Vigilante, and Shining Knight at cards. The story should have been about the classic League dealing with something, and when it seems like they’re about to be overwhelmed, the other heroes (with the new Leaguers that tended to show up more often like Green Arrow, the Question, and Stargirl) arrive to save them, but in a way that celebrates both the original group and the extended line-up of Unlimited. Instead it’s a Green Lantern tale with no love for the rest of the team in their final issue.
Recommendation: A terrible way to end the series but a good Green Lantern story if that’s what your looking for.
