There’s an annoying trend in stories to have dead parents. We’ve joked for years about Disney’s habit of killing parents, they keep killing off Superman’s Earth parents along with his Kryptonian ones after the post-Crisis DC Universe brought them back, and the Flash had his dad framed for killing his mom despite both being in continuity prior. Apparently dead parents or dead kids are becoming a science fiction trend so author Caroline Furlong goes into why this is a bad thing and explains what “happily ever after” really means versus what modern writers seem to think it means.
