I think there’s also a problem of being afraid to give a character a challenge, especially the tokenized ones because they’re worried some group will call them racist, sexist, whichever-ist, because they’re just so invested in what’s become a “pet character” that they can’t bring themselves to have the character struggle or deal with the consequences of their actions.
