“Return Of The Shredder” part 2
ADAPTATION/ARTIST/LETTERER: Dave Garcia
ORIGINAL SCRIPTS: Cristy Marx & David Weiss
COLORIST: Barry Grossman
EDITOR: Victor Gorelick
Shredder breaks Baxter out of a home for the criminally insane as part of his plan, having him build a machine to capture Splinter. Meanwhile, April warns the Turtles about the “Crooked Ninja Turtle Gang” ruining their reputation thanks to the boss’ girlfriend hating Turtles. Finding Splinter missing and a big hole in their living space, the Turtles follow the path and confront the gang, easily beating them because they were just a delaying tactic. They confront Shredder, but an overeager Baxter ruins the trap and the Turtles manage to save Splinter while April uncovers the fake ninjas. Even April’s boss has to admit it’s the truth so his girlfriend dumps him.
What they got right: As an adaptation it does well (though this was when the humor and lower animation budget both started to weaken the show for me) in recreating the episode. The art is pretty good.
What they got wrong: Some of the character designs are a bit off, Irma’s being the most off. I don’t know if they got an early model sheet or if they didn’t know she’d become a relatively important supporting cast member, but either way she looks more like an Archie comics character than the one in the episode. The leader of the gang looks a bit more like Rocksteady’s human form; not exactly, but closer to him than the leader in the episode.
What I think overall: I don’t know when the comic started doing their own thing instead of adapting episodes but at least they got the adaptation right while still putting out an interesting comic. I have two more comics from this run, one of which is a multi-story comic that includes a crossover with Archie, which is what we’ll get into next week.
