Catch more from Film Theory on YouTube

As a fan of novelizations I’m compelled to point out one more detail about them: they’re based on the latest available version of the script in order to get the book out the same time as the movie or as close as they can. Anything changed on set or the cutting room floor doesn’t make it into the book. For example, ET The Extra Terrestrial was supposed to have Elliot laying down M&Ms, which is reflected in the novelization. However, M&M Mars turned them down, so they went with their second choice, Reese’s Pieces, who was all in, and that’s what was in the movie, while the novel still has M&Ms.

My point is…how many of the things MatPat suggests prove his robo-Vanessa theory were planned but for whatever reasons couldn’t make it to the final movie? He talks about his character’s dad being Sparky, that his character was originally supposed to be a teenager (or MatPat joins the list of adult actors playing teenage characters), or that the lawyer’s creepy actions will be removed from further versions of the novelization and wasn’t in the novel. What else was removed? In addition to padding the novel out (the opposite of how it goes from book to movie), and writers sometimes adding their own ideas in for various reasons, and what’s intended and what’s in error?
