Calvin & Hobbs warned us about this day.

Snowmanilas #1

I think it’s part of a graphic novel or something given that the digital copy includes credits for the first three issues.

“Golden Gorilla”

WRITER: Daniel Karhunen

PENCILER: Cynthia Sousa

INKER: Shon Burke

COLOURIST (it’s British, after all): Grace Freeman

COVER ART: Åsa Ekström (thank you, WordPress character map) & Grace Freeman

LETTERER: Mike Stock

On planet Snowmania, the dragon Iskaarme warns four Snowmanilas, humanoid snowmen, that their yeti enemies the Snowgurellias are headed for a magic monkey statue that will give them great power. Punkster and Wyo head for the statue while Rokyo and Pop-Knock (I just report and review these things, folks) keep the main army at bay. Getting into the cave housing the statue, the Snowgurellia general, Appo, reaches the statue while the walls or something takes down his men. Turns out the statue is the trap and Punkster, Wyo, and Iskaarme have to save him from the curse or the golden monkey statue will be him.

What they got right: The art is really good. The designs of the snowmen and yeti people aren’t trying to be silly, letting the story handle the jokes while taking the characters seriously. The concept is also interesting.

What they got wrong: Is there a page missing? How did they rescue the general from the gold curse? He’s being covered in gold one moment, the now goldless statue falls and breaks, and suddenly Appo is fine and thanking his enemies. And why does he keep calling everybody “swine”?

What I think overall: This was an unusual read. I’m neutral towards it overall. Parts I liked and parts are confusing, but overall I’d recommend the curious give it a look.
