I was going to do a special Easter comic with Jake & Leon, but I couldn’t decide on how to pull it off, and I’ve gone on about being busy enough. So because I wanted to do SOMETHING for Easter, here’s the Flying House’s Easter episodes.
As I mentioned before, The Flying House was my favorite of the two CBN/Tatsunuko series, but Superbook gets all of the attention. The latter focused on Old Testament stories, so they had the more action, while the former focused on the New Testament. I still found them interesting, and liked both shows. But while Superbook only devoted one episode to Jesus’ birth, ministry, death, and resurrection, the kids of The Flying House ran into Jesus and the disciples numerous times during their attempts to get home.
Rather than post all the episodes, I’m just going to link you to them. Episodes 37-43 dealt with the “Easter” part of the Jesus story, as the kids go through the torture of watching someone they had come to know and love be tortured for no reason (as they saw it). Note also that Professor Bumble knows what’s about to happen and in one episode even says that he had hoped to spare the children from this part of Jesus’ life, but knows it’s important (or at least important not to change history).
- The Preparation (I posted this more for the message of the story, and because it sets up the next episode. At holiday time, some people can be so busy setting up the party that they forget to actually take part in it.)
- Betrayed
- Who’s in Charge
- The Crown of Thorns
- Golgotha
- The Empty Tomb
- With You Always
That’s one of the things I liked about this version. It was more of a serial format. These six episodes deal with Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension in a way that kids can handle, but doesn’t take away from the emotion of the situation. Frankly, it’s better than Mel Gibson’s rather violent version.
So a Happy Easter to everyone. I’ll post the “Best Scene” in Monday’s review of Billy Batson & The Magic of Shazam! #14.
