Some kind of military unit is kidnapping the underwater people. This includes a group training, not knowing one of the trainees, Kiani, went for a swim. The story mostly focuses on her as she remembers her past.
That’s all you get in nine pages. The art is nice, especially the underwater moments, and the characters aren’t as thin as the last Fathom book I reviewed (though the colors are a bit more washed out), but there’s also no story here to review. If you didn’t have at least some prior knowledge of this universe, and I only have one issue to go with, you’ll be a bit lost. Yes, who the military unit is working for and why they want to capture the ocean people alive is what the full story will presumably be about, but I wouldn’t even know these were aquatic people if not for the previous exposure.
In short, this shouldn’t be your introduction to the Fathom story, but it is nice to look at.
