Meddick himself says he was the wrong choice for a family humor strip. I like his Robotman stories, but with a bit of work, Robotman and his friends, the ones Meddick didn’t use in the strip like Stellar and Oops, could have worked as a comic strip. I actually enjoyed the family years more than the Monty years, though the sci-fi references were of course something I got into. Someday I may attempt to make it work, but I’m kind of busy at the moment.

I’m slightly familiar with “Monty” as a strip I had virtually no interest in (I don’t think they even ran it in my hometown paper even once), but the bizarre licensing fiasco behind its creation was simply irresistible (the Robotman doll is exactly the kind of cute tchotchke I’d love to pick up at a Cracker Barrel one day), and I’m grateful it has survived in some form to this day. Looking up today’s installment (4/14/26) brought a timely observation of tax season, and some weird cat humor that felt like if “Garfield” played up the communication barrier between Garf and Jon way more. I chuckled at it, so mission accomplished, I guess. On a totally unrelated note, I freaking love “Popeye” since trying to follow Bud Sagendorf reruns a year ago, and Randy Muholland’s meta Sunday strips are a great update of a timeless feature.

Huh! I’m totally familiar with those C&H strips (I read 2 of the books back in middle school), but not with Robotman. Never heard of this news before.

    • I only got to see the strips when my friend showed me a compilation book he found, and then I found a couple more. I only knew of the cartoon and other merchandise mentioned in the video as a kid.
