To be fair, the main source of inspiration for the film, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Tom King, apparently isn’t meant for girls, either. Like most of King’s work, it’s aimed squarely at combat veterans dealing with ongoing issues related to PTSD and similar traumas, who find it easier to vicariously showcase their experiences through depictions of popular characters rather than through therapy/talking with their loved ones. It’s a well King has run dry countless times by now, but it tends to work exceedingly well. In the case of Supergirl, it feels to me like absurdist theater, possibly the weirdest pairing of an obscure character with such dark material in King’s oveure.

I have an article coming up that will address that and other reasons I’m not interested in this movie.
