I do a weekly comic strip, Jake & Leon. It’s a commentary/parody strip about storytelling. But outside of the general creative process I never really thought about how I tell a story within those four panels. Hassan of Strip Panel Naked posted a video recently going into how comic strips tell their story versus the comic books he usually covers. This is interesting.
When it comes to Shredder’s mutant minions fans of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remember Bebop and Rocksteady, and maybe Tokka and Razar from the second movie. The Mirage comics didn’t have Shredder using mutant henchmen as far as I know. But do you know who Scrag is? Matt of Dinosaur Dracula does and gives you the short history of this forgotten character who never did much out of the miniseries.
Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

I couldn’t go into slowdown without finishing this book since we’re on the last chapter. I don’t want a repeat of Star Wars: Shadows Of The Empire.
Remember how we got here: Isaac Asimov didn’t like the science presented in the Fantastic Voyage movie and yet he was approached to do the novelization. I’m not sure why whomever was responsible for getting the novelization out insisted on Asimov beyond his standing in science fiction. So Asimov tweaked the science a bit, and it benefits the story. Then he tweaked the characters and for the most part it doesn’t. Also for some reason the girl seems to be singled out and I’m really hoping this doesn’t end with a potential romance between Grant and Peterson. The movie didn’t do that and not every story has to. Even at this point that was a bit cliché, wasn’t it?
So as we join our miniaturized crew one final time (minus one) it’s a race to get out before they return to normal size. How will they possibly get out in time? Well, the title for chapter 18 gives that away but this was one of the moments Asimov wanted to “fix” according to my short research so let’s see how he alters the end of the movie. If you came from the homepage I’ll put the title after the jump.

The Fansided site Her Cape contributor Sarabeth Pollack saw a thread from comic creator Jimmy Palmiotti’s Twitter feed showcasing how hard it is to make a living at comics even if your working for one of the big names. There’s some good advice here too.

As you can tell there is no Jake & Leon this week. As I noted in the last Worldbuilding Project video update I’m getting run down and stressed out. The last few years have been nothing but stress. These past few weeks have been filled with distractions due to life issues. And I think I’m coming down with something. I want to take this week to get rid of some of my distractions so I’m going to be limiting my posting this week. Not entirely but there won’t be as many posts.
None of the comics are in a cliffhanger position so this is a good week to take a break and reduce BW time. I know, second time this year, but they will be back next week. I do however have a cliffhanger with the Fantastic Voyage novelization because I’m on the last chapter. So I will be reviewing that this week and give my final thoughts on the book overall over at The Clutter Reports. (Speaking of which today’s toy review is Alternators Sideswipe.) I want to keep that project up and I will be working on some clutter cleaning of the digital kind as well as other things.
I will be trying to do some work on the Worldbuilding Project so I will post updates for that. If you see a Morning Article Link it’s because one of my projects is going over my e-mails and I’ll probably find a link or two to post. It’s disappointing how many emails I have to go over, and I can’t even fully blame that on 2016. I need to come up with a schedule that allows me to go over emails, keep up on the latest news and commentaries, make my own commentaries, work on comics, create videos, and get my living space and my life organized. I need to fix this mess so I can be at my creative best. Who knows, maybe I can do both the Worldbuilding Project and have Morning Article Links by putting the updates in the comic spots this week but I’m not promising anything. The point is to pull back before I push myself over the edge and start producing subpar (according to my skill level anyway) products.
As for the rest of the week, while I’m hoping not to miss Friday Night Fights this week I won’t be without feature posts. Only these will be filler videos–reviews and commentaries by other creators you should really be checking out on YouTube. Maybe even a skit. I haven’t picked them out yet.
With any luck normal operations will resume next week, including that Finally Watched I want to do, and if something comes up I really need to discuss I will. Hopefully I’ll also have time to finish editing the panel I’ve already started working on if not one of the other two left and have that for you on Saturday. But I need to take care of a few things and maybe take some time to relax. Healing isn’t the same as relaxing although it may appear that way to others. I still need a vacation though, or at least a cabin somewhere I won’t be disturbed but still has decent wi-fi so I can get creative work done and still take time to myself. That’s hard to do when you have no money coming in.
People riding armored dinosaurs into battle. What kid wouldn’t want that toy? No little boy I know or met. You may have seen two different takes on that in the Imaginext toyline (one with high-tech, another with more ancient tech) but the idea began with the 1980s toyline and cartoon Dino-Riders, aired as part of the Marvel Action Universe syndicated programming block. Two different alien groups, humans and non-humans (guess which one is the heroes?), crashland on prehistoric Earth, and their war continues. I’m darn surprised this wasn’t more popular than it was.
Tonight we’ll look at the first episode of the series, so “cleverly” titled “The Adventure Begins”. The pilot was released on home video by Tyco, the company who made the line, with a framing device that seems unnecessary. A group of kids visiting a museum, one kid is bored by the boring teacher and goes into the room with dinosuars, and that somehow transitions to the story. It has nothing to do with the story and will never show up in the series so you can basically ignore it until the actual show starts. Nice bit of rotoscoping though. The ads were on the video, using the commercial breaks for the TV show.
