Jake & Leon #354: Laptopped

Sure I could have imported all that to the laptop before making the comic, or simply fixed it on my other computer before posting, but that would ruin the bit.

I am going to transfer the proper font over, but as I said in yesterday’s v-log I want to set up my art corner to do all my artwork at. Which computer I use will depend on my mood. Both are outdated because I have no money coming in and the laptop was a gift years ago. My mission continues.

No book review this week, although I will be announcing the next Chapter By Chapter in two weeks. In the meantime I posted my wrap-up review of the Fantastic Voyage novelization over at The Clutter Reports.

I was hoping to get more done last week with the slow going but thanks to the cable, phone, and internet issues we had that didn’t happen. I don’t want to do another slow going because that hardly makes for interesting reading, so that was a total bust. This week starts a new DC miniseries, but this one doesn’t have Superman. It’s DC’s Total Justice, based on a toyline from that time. It’s also the book I mentioned by Christopher Priest in a morning article link. Nothing else new to add. We’re just back to business as usual.

BW V-Log: Post Partner Prospect

Sorry to preempt Saturday Night Showcase but now that I’ve been able to post a bit after being removed from the YouTube Partner Program I have an idea as to what I can and can’t do. Sadly this means not only losing monetization but losing a rather important tool. In this v-log I go over what the future is for the video articles here at BW Media Spotlight.

BW’s Worldbuilding Project Day 14: Barriers

BW’s Morning Article Link: A Rocketeer Cartoon…sort of

The Rocketeer (film)

This would have been up yesterday morning but Frontier is having issues in CT…or with my luck it’s just our house.

Fans of the World War II jetpack-wearing superhero inspired by the old “rocket men” serials…don’t rejoice just yet. Deadline is reporting that Disney is producing a Rocketeer cartoon. (You may remember they made the live-action movie some years ago.) However, it’s not going to follow the classic characters. No, the first Rocketeer animated series is from Disney Junior and will star a young girl who for whatever reason is next in line to become the Rocketter.

On the one hand kids who have never heard of the comic or the movie aren’t going to know who the Rocketeer is so I don’t see the point of disappointing fans of the late Dave Stevens’ book when you could literally call her anything else and fans of the “rocket men” and superheroes would still check it out or give their blessings. Do you know how long we’ve wanted a Rocketeer cartoon or live-action series set in WW2 and featuring Cliff, Peevy, and Betty? There is no point in calling her the Rocketeer. “Rocket Kid”, “Rocket Girl”, “The Human Rocket”…anything would have worked. However as a fan I’m not entirely bothered by the premise so much as the reasoning. It does sound like an interesting idea and I’ll give it a shot and probably a review knowing me. It just seems like a waste to make the first Rocketeer cartoon without the original cast, even modernized. This is not going to conv

[UPDATE 8/24/2018: I’m not sure how I planned to finish that sentence and I don’t know why it ended where it did. I’m assuming it was something like “This is not going to convince me to enjoy it” or something like that but I do plan to give it a shot.]

BW Filler Video: The Further Evil Of The Bee Movie

As if a movie in which a bee dates a human woman and ruins the honey industry and nearly the world until the bees save the day. Except The Bee Movie gets everything wrong, and not just stuff even the naughtier sect of the furry community would find disgusting. MatPat of Film Theory learned how honeybees may actually be a bigger threat than Jerry Seinfeld’s movie suggested.

BW’s Filler Video: And You Thought Ernie Was Obsessed With Rubber Duckies

One of my friends shared this video on Facebook and it was too hilarious not to share during this stress break. Comedian James Veitch, whom I mostly know from Wix ads, was on Conan O’Brien’s talk show on TBS and did a stand up routine involving rubber ducks that is just really hilarious. Unless you’re one of his flatmates/roommates. Luckily this is also up on their YouTube channel.

BW’s Morning Article Link: If White Writers “Can’t” Write Black Characters…

…then it stands to reason that black writers can’t write white characters, doesn’t it? Actually BOTH ideas are just stupid and divisive. And yet that’s the extreme that DC and Marvel seem to be taking. You can only write for the gender, race, and sexual orientation that you are part of. (I wonder if that includes religion and atheism? Remember, they don’t consider religions AS religions but a culture because their understanding of religion is questionable at best.) This means that good writers are being limited in what characters they can work on. And it looks like even writers of other “groups” suffer the same problem, that they can’t write for white males unless they are white males. Because it only makes sense, right? Actually none of this makes sense but that’s what happens when politics and activism force their way into every part of our lives and not just the parts they belong.

Apparently this is the barrier that black writer Christopher Priest (sometimes credited only by his last name) has crashed into, as he was only allowed to write black characters, causing him to pretty much turn down everything given because he was tired of only being able to write black characters. In this interview found by Four Color Media Monitor Priest discusses the problem he’s had being, for lack of a better word, typecast because of his skin color and not his writing style. And while I had problems with his run on Steel and a few other comics he’s not really a bad writer, who has worked on plenty of non-white led titles. I’ll even be starting one miniseries next week he worked on with primarily white and half-white characters. (Mixed race, not those guys from that one Star Trek episode.
