You have to wonder what’s going on with the Disney-run Lucasfilm. First they replaced the directors of the Han Solo film because they didn’t understand Star Wars, and that’s after the director of Rogue One made a good movie that didn’t fit the tone of the franchise up to this point. Now they’ve lost the director of The Last Jedi. Do they even know how to hire people for this franchise?

Richard Anderson, best known for the role of Oscar Goldman on the Six Million Dollar Man and the original Bionic Womanshows, passed away recently. The Draconic Verses looks at Anderson’s career.

If you’re curious about the full story of what happened in the Canadian bill we discussed yesterday I came across this thesis by Joseph Tilley going over the history of the Fulton bill. It chronicles the attempts by the Canadian PTA to ban crime comics, notes some admittedly legitimate reasons why they went extreme on comics, and that they were less willing to lump superhero comics with crime and horror comics, their actual targets. Basically despite PTA chairperson Eleanor Grey using Wertham as a mentor she and Mr. Fulton weren’t as extreme as Wertham was.
One thing I did notice on my own (the piece is relatively neutral) is that most of the people against comic books were of the cultural elite, growing up well-to-do and not poor on the streets. Mrs. Grey also believed all kids should be reading books and that comics were somehow taking kids away from books. As someone who grew up with and still loves both I have to disagree. One of the Canadian officials grew up on a farm and thought kids weren’t causing trouble if they were doing chores. There was even a Communist sympathizer on the anti-comic side…which is amusing when you figure the “Red Scare” was one of the reasons brought up to fight crime comics. It’s worth reading and less frustrating than what we’ll be looking at today as Wertham looks at his anti-comic friends overseas.
Chapter By Chapter Special: Seduction Of The Innocent ch. 11 part 3
So we’ve been to Canada and England, plus stopovers at Sweden and Belgum but it was the same old ranting so there was no point going over that. Next on our anti-comic book tour is France…which is just laughable. I’ve never been further than Vermont but I’ve seen samplings of French media and I’m pretty sure comics are the least of their issues. But maybe things were different in the 1950s? I haven’t been further back than 1973 and I wasn’t paying attention to anything besides the mobile over my crib so I’m hardly a good eyewitness there. We haven’t discovered time travel, thank God! We’d easily time paradox ourselves out of existence. “I’m going to kill Hitler and make the world a better place. Wait, my grandparents met during the war and now I don’t exist so now Hitler lives so my grandparents met so I can kill Hitler but now my grandparents never met and I never existed….”
Yeah, let’s just get on to the cerebral chaos that doesn’t hurt your brain. Oh wait, I’m still reviewing Seduction Of The Innocent. So much for that plan.
Make sure you’re read up and come share my pain.
