Saturday Night Showcase> Trigun Stampede

In the early days of Saturday Night Showcase I posted the first episode of Trigun, a Japanese space western inspired by the so-called “spaghetti westerns” of Italy. It’s only fair that tonight I look at the re-imagining of that story, Trigun Stampede. When the initial trailers dropped I have to be honest that I didn’t really like what I saw. It lacked the energy of the original in the first fight I saw. A later clip showed more focus on the gunplay and I actually didn’t think it looked as bad.

And so I went into Stampede with an open mind. Would it make for a good remake or was it as unimpressive as it first looked. If you want to see the original first episode to compare with tonight’s (I rewatched it for this review) here is that Showcase. With that let’s see what the newbie has to offer.

Mother’s Basement Ranks The Hollywood Anime “Adaptations”

Hollywood has a strange history with Japanese adaptation. Cultural changes should be expected, but showing less concern than current comic book adaptations are going to bother the anime fandom, some of whom are almost as self-interested given they seem to want to exclude new people, use random Japanese words and think they’re being kawaii (spoiler: that means cute and no, they’re not), and will tell you all American animation is terrible except when they like it. Avatar: The Last Airbender has no Japanese connection at all and thus makes me question how they actually describe “anime” versus “animated”. And don’t dare call it a “cartoon” because you get the anime elitists AND the animation elitists who think the term is important to describing maturity. Sorry, where was I?

Oh right, bad anime adaptations. They may or may not come from anime as an origin point. Some were manga or light novels but if it’s got an anime adaptation Geoff Thew of YouTube channel Mother’s Basement slapped it on a list of Hollywood adaptations of Japanese animated classics (in the West at least) and even ranked them. I need to get something out fast and it’s a long video so even if you disagree with his list you may like to know what else is out there. NOTE: Some swearing, though not a lot, and some graphic violence.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Tales Of Wonder #4

The typical response to this comic’s artwork.

Tales Of Wonder #4

Pet Shop Comics (1998)

Once again no credits and once again the artwork is terrible. Look, I want to see a good Christian comic either for Christians who want an alternative to the more atheistic approach to comics even when it has Judeo-Christian themes, or even as a Gospel-teaching tool. I’m a Christian myself. It’s why I got these two issues after hearing about it. However, I have seen better Christian comics with better art than this. As for the individual stories there are other problems.

Nickelodeon’s Mutant Mayhem (Or “My Issues With Nick’s Turtles”)

The bottom panel banned in the UK.

So the teaser for the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles project from the IP’s new owners at Nickelodeon (and thus Paramount) just dropped. It’s not too far from what I expect from the guy who ruined Green Hornet to be honest. And because it’s a teaser there isn’t a whole lot to talk about. The internet is going crazy discussing race-swapped April, which is certainly no surprise, I’m not a fan of the Turtles designs…and is Splinter sporting an afro? Is that cultural appropriation since he’s Japanese? Or did they turn Sho Nuff into a rat? See, the problem with teasers is you don’t really learn a lot. We get a look at the style of what’s coming and not much else. We don’t know the quality of the final work but we can at least tell the quality of the adaptation and frankly…I’m not impressed.

However, even I on occasion have to take advantage of what’s hot to form a discussion topic, so how do I do that with barely nothing to go on and little new to add to the conversation? Even if I got this out the day the teaser dropped I’d have been late to the part with my posting schedule even if I’m on time. Instead, I want to use this teaser as a model to discuss a related topic: why Nickelodeon has not done a very good job adapting this franchise, and the adaptation seems to get worse with each incarnation…which is also worth discussing in this article. Let’s start by looking at the teaser and I’ll go over each of the issues. I’ll save April for the end so those of you sick of that topic by now can just scroll to the final paragraph but I do plan to expand a bit on that as related to the idea that Nickelodeon might have sounded good in theory to sell the franchise to, but may not actually be a good idea in practice.
