LEGO Batman FCBD Special Edition (a tie-in to the upcoming Legacy Of The Dark Knight game)
DC Comics (June, 2026)
“The LEGO Batman Returns”
WRITER: Ivan Cohen
ARTIST/COLORIST: Paul Lee
LETTERER: Tom Napolitano
EDITOR: Michael McCalister
Batman was away, but now he’s back. However, there isn’t enough page count to go into those details. Batman’s reuniting with his friends…and trying to find a place to eat because he doesn’t have any money in his utility belt. Yeah, that’s about it for story. It’s twelve pages with a lot of big panels.
What they got right: I like the various LEGO and Batman nods in locations, item design, and even the sound effects, which are in LEGO except in one homage panel of the Joker and the famous image of the panel being covered in laughter.
What they got wrong: The whole needing to each joke get a bit lame by the end. This is supposed to be a tie-in to the upcoming game, which from what I heard was a tribute to previous Batman games done in the LEGO parody style. Yet this feels more like homaging the comics, but without knowing which parody Batman they’re working with. The LEGO Batman direct-to-video movies, which are tied in to the LEGO Batman games, isn’t the same Batman from the theatrical LEGO movies, not even his solo film. I’m not sure what version Cohen is going with but it should be the game/DTV version.
What I think overall: It’s easier to lean on nitpicks for a shorter comic with too many large panels. I was amused by it and it wasn’t even one I was expecting for Free Comic Book Day.
