You know, I’m kind of annoyed that Elmo basically took Sesame Street from the other Muppets. I can understand none of the humans I grew up with being there. Actors and actresses retire and while the actor who played Mr. Hooper stayed on until he passed away (and the show actually acknowledged it, which is surprising for a show targeting such little kids but they did it beautifully) but at some point even before HBO took over and cut the episode runtime in half Elmo had essentially pulled a Steve Urkel and took over a show he wasn’t even an original character for. After watching this though…I feel sorry for him. I have to wonder about the message the show is sending here.

Jake & Leon> Best Of Year Thirteen

Even though 2021 did its best to stop me, I still made it to #500!

I don’t know how I did it, but somehow I managed to work on comics through the 500s. It’s the longest I’ve done any comic and outside of the site itself the longest spent on any project. What started as me playing with art styles followed by needing a way to open a weekly wrap-up of comic reviews became something I’m almost proud of. Jake & Leon is basically a shorter commentary that allows me to practice on my art. October 26th is supposed to be the anniversary but with various issues and the Scooby-Doo intro retrospective I missed it. So let’s fix that.

Every year I like to go through the comics of the previous year and find my favorites. It could be a joke I really liked, something I did in the drawing that I’m proud of as someone of questionable drawing talent, or just one that for whatever reason was fun to make. I did miss a few but not as much as 2021 because I didn’t have a surgery to deal with. I did, however, take July off. So with that let’s take a trip back through a year’s worth of the crazy actions of Jake, Leon, Bill, Meredith, Beth, Max, Fizzbin, and the other characters and parodies that I’m still proud of one year on.

Slight correction: the whole “parents were worried the Human Torch would convince kids to set themselves on fire” thing is a myth. The reason the Human Torch was replaced in that version of The Fantastic Four cartoon is that Johnny Storm had been licensed as a potential movie and because licensing issues are stupid they couldn’t use him in the show, hence he was replaced by HERBIE. They the licensed the Thing the results would have been the same only with Ben Grimm replaced by HERBIE. And possibly we would have missed out on this version:

Yep, from Fred & Barney Meet The Thing. (Spoiler: they never actually met outside of the intro and ad break stingers.)

BW’s Art Soundoff 2022 #1: Here We Go Again

I won’t be having Jake and Max take part in Art Soundoff over at Jake & Leon this year. I’m not sure what they can add that they haven’t already in previous Art Soundoff years. If I think of something, one entry still qualifies.

Chapter By Chapter> TekWar chapter 14

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Time to dive back into The Future and the high-tech VR drugs. Last time the plot was actually more important than the worldbuilding as Jake got to do some actual investigating. This time I hope the momentum keeps going.

I’m a little confused on the spelling, as you may have noticed. The back cover calls the book TekWar with the W capitalized, but so often when I look it up it gets spelled Tekwar with the small W. Considering my own screenname, ShadowWing Tronix, and my fight to get GoBots spelled with the capital B and kept one word I know what a pain it is to get the internet to do it right. I even added the capitalized second W because people were trying to tell me there was only one w, and “Shadowing” wasn’t my name. So if I end up going back and forth know it’s the same typo issue that for some reason makes me go back to make sure Chapter By Chapter has the “By” capitalized. Otherwise the book says “TekWar” and that’s how I’m going to try to spell it, typos aside.
