Copyrights, Trademarks, And The SCP Foundation

Here’s a form of storytelling I wouldn’t have even thought to discuss on Art Of Storytelling, which will be returning soon I promise. The wiki was born from Wikipedia, an encyclopedia that can be edited by anybody. The project meant well, but with conflicting points of view vying for their perspective to be dominant whether they’re right about a given fact or not–or knowingly obscuring facts that conflict with their world view or what they want others to believe–it isn’t always the resource they think it is. However, by design it is simply a place to share information. The rise of fan wikis, wikis created by fans to catalog a favorite series or franchise, and creator wikis, a way for a project’s creator to keep track of their stories for themselves as much as their fans, have created a new way to store and share information, lore and history. It’s a way to catalog fiction.

The SCP Foundation wiki however is a way to create fiction. The site pretends to be a collection of the disturbing monsters secretly running around the world. Not like werewolves as I understand it but the unnerving “creepypasta” type stuff. I don’t really follow horror so I’m not completely familiar but I believe it works like this: you create one of these creatures, their strengths, their weaknesses, and what body horror method it prefers to kill by. You submit it to the site and if approved it become part of the SCP files. (The name stands for “Secure, Contain, Protect”.) Working under a Creative Commons license these creatures may show up in some indie games or comics, usually as flavor text but sometimes as the actual threat of the story, with all credit given to the person who created the creature in the first place. While not my kind of thing I can appreciate the creativity and community coming from such a project.

So of course someone has to come along to ruin the fun. Thanks to loopholes and corruption someone in Russia is trying to take over the Russian version of the site and the creations that are a part of it. As MatPat from Game Theory reports in the below video this may threaten the very nature of Creative Commons, not to mention a terrible thing to do to the creators who worked hard on this project.

BW’s Morning Video: The Future Of The Streaming Wars

Catch more Film Theory on their YouTube channel.

By the way there’s a video from MatPat’s other home at Game Theory coming out tonight where I have more to say and I swear it’s a coincidence. I even scheduled that one before seeing this one. But if you want a legal free option for streaming there is the sites from a recent Morning Video from CNet as well as the official YouTube channels I’ve been using recently for Saturday Night Showcase. A number of classic TV and movie rights holders have been posting stuff to their own YouTube channels and the YouTube Movies channel has old TV shows and movies to go through. Plus all the original content on YouTube. What I’m saying is there are plenty of options and some day I should do an article about that.

BW’s Morning Article Link: To Love-Ru Dub Debate

This doesn’t look like my kind of show. It probably isn’t hentai but it’s at least what they call ecchi, right? Maybe that’s why a certain line change in a recent dubbed episode of To Love-Ru has gotten fans convinced it was done for sociopolitical reasons rather than dub necessities? This is the kind of drama I don’t usually go into but given so many discussions and postings on my part this year about the sub versus dub debate this is one I find rather interesting.

Jim Lee And The Future Of DC Comics

Okay, I’m exaggerated a little. The hands shouldn’t be segmented.

I wasn’t planning to use Jake & Leon as an opener twice in a row but there you go.

With Dan Didio no longer a publisher at DC Comics fans rejoiced. I however wait to see the results because at this point even when creators and publishers talk like they know what they’re doing the results prove otherwise. At any rate this leaves former co-publisher Jim Lee the sole publisher of DC Comics and the question is whether or not he’s up to the task or will fix the direction the DC Universe has gone as of late. Lee joined the DC family after taking his WildStorm studio out of Image comics, considered working with Marvel, but ultimately signing up with DC Comics. Since the New 52 the WildStorm brand has been mostly dormant. A new WildStorm continuity was announced and may even be running by now. I never really followed WildStorm. Meanwhile, the WildCATS and Stormwatch teams (as well as Helspont, the WildCATS main enemy) have shown up in the DC Universe, and done little if anything since. It’s not all that promising, but maybe recent comments will fix that.

Somehow in the midst of the overblown fear of the coronavirus C2E2 happened in Chicago. (I’m not saying don’t be concerned by the outbreak but remember when SARS and the avian flu were supposed to wipe out humanity? I’m surprised there weren’t comics and movies made around that premise. I guess they figured we’d all be to dead to read or watch it by the time it was done?) While the publisher panel was canceled due to Didio’s departure Jim Lee did have a personal panel scheduled so he took some time out of that to address the rumors and discuss some of his intentions since it’s too early to talk about a lot of stuff in production. I have the highlights from a few different sites because only Newsarama had the full “real-time” comments and that site loads a ton of crap besides ads and it’s a pain to load. (I wish my host would stop that white bar thing that seems to be the new hotness for site ads and it’s not because I don’t see a penny of it. It’s because it’s annoying when you try to read an article. At least they don’t have that annoying browser-slowing video that follows you even though you scrolled past it FOR A @#$@#%$ REASON, WEBMASTER!) So we at least know what plans Lee has announced.
