The History Of Star Trek: The Animated Series (On Nickelodeon)

Star Trek followed the crew on what was supposed to be a five year mission, but the show only lasted three. It was through reruns that the series finally gained an audience and became the cultural icon it is today, not counting more recent fare that I don’t see inspiring new medical equipment, cell phones, or anything else like the original series and The Next Generation has. Filmation hoped to capitalize on this by producing an hour-long animated series, free of many of the budget constraints of the original series. NBC liked the idea but opted to make it a half-hour series for Saturday morning. While it lacked in a lot of dead redshirts and Kirk’s various liaisons the spirit of the original series and the smart sci-fi writing were still intact.

I first saw the cartoon in syndicated reruns since it aired before my time on NBC’s Saturday morning lineup but it also aired on Nickelodeon in the 1980s, which means Nick Knacks, the retrospective series of shows that aired on Nickelodeon whether made for the channel specifically or not, did an episode devoted to it. Naturally it also features as much about how it ended up on Nickelodeon as it does talking about the creation and behind the scenes of the show itself.  I learned a few things I didn’t know before so maybe you will too. And I have a few of my own thoughts as well. The video is clocked at 43:25 but worth a watch for fans of Star Trek, Nickelodeon, cartoons, or Filmation. I was going to save this for a Saturday Night Showcase but I end up having more to say about it than I thought.

BW’s Morning Article Link: So Much For The Howard The Duck Cartoon

“This is for my bird bretheren, kitty!”

Not only Howard The Duck but also the Tigra/Dazzler team-up series as Kevin Fiege takes control of all of Marvel’s TV, movie, and internet productions. Two other shows already in production for Hulu, where the Howard and Tigra/Dazzler shows were supposed to air, will go forward but it’s not clear from this article what the future holds for the shows on Disney XD, while Agents Of SHIELD will be hitting its final season.

Chapter By Chapter> Spider-Man: Carnage In New York ch. 3

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

In the previous two chapters we’ve seen Spider-Man in action and got to meet Carnage. In this chapter we see Peter get some quality time with his wife. Yes, wife. For those of you unfamiliar with the comics Peter Parker used to be married to Mary Jane Watson, until a publisher came along that hated the idea and decided divorce wasn’t enough–he wanted to erase the marriage from Marvel continuity because divorce would age the character and for some silly reason having Peter happily married was considered restraining for writers who spent more time trying to come up with ways to end or ignore the marriage than actually trying to use it. They also thought fans couldn’t relate to Peter Parker happily married to a beautiful woman who only became a model/actress after marrying him. Just do a search on BW for “One More Day” or “Spider-Marriage” and you’ll see my thoughts on the whole encounter and the insulting way they undid it than damaged both characters. For the rest of the review I’m going to remember the happy times of Peter and Mary Jane Parker, loving husband and wife.

Of course for us comic fans we aren’t going to learn much in this chapter. It’s for the people who bought the novel because they heard of Spider-Man or watched the show and didn’t know what was happening in the comics. So let’s meet the happy family.

Yes, I know she’s covered up by the sheet and panel in that area but they exposed just enough that I’m not taking the chance.

I still need to see this movie but I hear I need to finish the Avengers movies first. Also here’s a link to the other Mysterio video he mentioned.

BW’s Programming Note: Tooth Pull Edition

No Jake & Leon this week I’m afraid. Monday I had a tooth pulled, Tuesday I was tired and a bit dizzy, Wednesday I was just tired, and the rest of the week was playing catch-up. By the time I thought of a half-way decent idea (rejecting a joke connected to this week in which Leon had his own dental visit that just wasn’t funny even by this comic’s low standards) it was too late to implement it and I’d still like something better. Hopefully the comic returns next week so this week all I have is the update section.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I look at the last of the Transformers Universe figures I have, King Atlas.

So what’s planned this week? I have the last of the Archie Scooby-Doo comics I own for Friday and we’re nearing the end of the classic Star Trek comics. The next chapter of Spider-Man: Carnage In New York comes out Monday and if I can there will be the debut of a new article series on Friday, one that I’ve thought about for a while and really plays into the site’s tagline and mission statement. Doing a Finally Watched or Free Comic Inside like I planned last week would be nice as well, but we’ll see what happens. Have a great week, folks!
