Super Mario Brothers Had A Game Show

While video games have suffered from poor adaptation in live-action, the cartoons have at least scored the occasional victory…or at least was a decent show. Then you have Double Dragon but that’s not worth remembering. Also not worth remembering were the Mario Brothers related shows I brought up this morning. However, if you think that and the movie so bad even the people working on it hated it are the only horrible things Mario-related, I have to be the bearer of bad news.

There have been attempts to make game shows around video games. Video Power in its second season switched to a game show and it could have been worse. It could have been The Video Game, a show that made the future announcer for the original Double Dare act like a dragon while some kid walked around a “maze” and that wasn’t even the dumbest game in the show. You did have Starcade and Nick Arcade but those were hosted by professionals who either wanted to make a good show, actually liked video games, or just wanted to entertain kids. And then there’s The Super Mario Challenge, a UK game show that tried to theme an entire game around the world of Mario and Luigi Mario. In this look back Harry Yack shows that about as much love as the first two video game shows we mentioned was put into it. As in none at all, and apparently the UK had more of these than we did in the US. I think we were lucky.

BW’s Morning Article Link: King Koopa Had A TV Show

This isn’t even close to his most embarrassing moment, as you’ll see.

While checking out the video I’ll be using for tonight’s post the host mentions a show called King Koopa’s Kool Kartoons and I had to look into this thing. I didn’t find much about it but what little I could makes me glad I didn’t have to put up with it. That “Club Mario” crap taking over The Super Mario Brothers Super Show was bad enough. (That’s a bonus morning link for y’all.)

BW Vs. SlashFilm: We At Least Agree Fandom Is The Problem

Actually, we mostly agree on this issue so calling this a “Vs” article is probably branding at this point or lack of a better article title. “BW Agrees But…” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. So since I won’t be going over the whole thing consider this a bonus Article Link and read the /Film commentary first. It’s from contributor Andrew Todd, discussing how the Marvel fandom and Disney fandom have been very vocal and protective of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like I said I mostly agree with him.

I’m on record being in favor of fans but not fandoms. Fandoms have a habit of being insular and niche hipsters or something. They’re like those movies or TV episodes you see where a stranger comes to town, and the townsfolk there hate strangers and want to get rid of them as soon as possible to keep their town “safe” from the outsiders. I see this mostly in anime fandoms but it’s a problem in every media genre and format out there right now. It’s why comics are now only available in a few places compared to being all over the place in their heyday. Then you have the subfandoms, arguing over who is best girl or who would win in a fight and heaven forbid you choose the wrong side because clearly you aren’t a “true fan”. However, since I’m saying “mostly agree” that must mean that Mr. Todd and I have a few differences of opinion. The “Vs” in the title has to make sense somehow right? Otherwise this WOULD be just a Morning Article Link.

(Sidebar: I want to smack every person who has ever seriously used the expression “true fan” upside the head. Preferably with the guy who legit used the term “fake geek girl” for any girl who ranks higher than a five in attractiveness, like all of “our” women need to be plain or ugly and not look like the hot girls in our media. That’s a level of psychotherapy I cannot offer. Then again there are plenty of “plain” women I find very attractive so I’m not the guy to ask.)

BW’s Morning Article Link: Fantastic Four Celebrity Roast

Yes, apparently this is a thing that happened and by Marvel themselves. In 1982 the Marvel creators at the time got together a made a comic where the heroes of the Marvel universe had a celebrity roast of the Fantastic Four. Oddly these might not be Spidey’s better quips.

Chapter By Chapter: The Merry Adv Of Robin Hood part 1st ch. 3

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Remember, the book is in public domain. Download or read the ebook online legally and for free at Project Gutenberg, Google Books or the Internet Archive among other sites, or check out the audiobook from LibriVox. You can also use a print copy. In either case my copy may not match up with yours chapter-wise. Follow along with the very-long subtitle. For this chapter:

Part First:

Telling How The Sheriff Of Nottingham Swore That He Would Deal Dole To Robin Hood. Also How He Made Three Trial Thereat, But Missed Each Time By A Good Bow’s Length.

We’ve already gone through the first two tales of this part. We saw Robin be a jerk to a guy just doing his job and that the famous archery scene didn’t happen the way we were told. We now go into the third of the Sheriff’s failed attempts to seize Robin Hood. I wonder what other changes will be forthcoming from the way his story is told today? We already know that Prince John is too young to be in control of Nottingham, the tax overload that Robin is famous for fighting against has thus far not revealed itself, and we still have had no sign of Maid Marian save for a passing line of dialog in the prologue. Robin Hood may also be the first example of a sliding timeline as the Crusades haven’t even happened yet and he doesn’t suddenly have a Muslim sidekick despite being on the Christian side of the holy war. I think at this point it’s safe to ignore what you know because even the stuff we know about Robin and the merry men (which isn’t their group name but a general description) we obviously don’t know well at all.
