Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers #5

FINAL ISSUE

IDW Publishing (May 2010)

WRITERS: Nick Roche & James Roberts
ARTIST: Nick Roche
COLORIST: Josh Burcham
LETTERER: Chris Mowry
ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Denton J. Tipton
EDITOR: Andy Schmidt

As Overlord continues to wreck the Wreckers, the Aequitas recovery team learns the truth about what Impactor did all those years ago. However, they decide not to use the deterrence chips to destroy the Decepticons, because Impactor will be destroyed as well. Instead, using Ironfist’s new connection to Aequitas, they use the chips to destroy Overlord. Later, Prowl receives the Aequitas data, records of Autobot trials that may shed some negative light on the Autobots, and must decide whether or not to give this data to the new Autobot leader, Bumblebee. On Earth, Verity appears to take over the “mission” of “Fisitron”.

What they got right: While I’m still not happy with all the carnage in this story, even if it is robot on robot, at least it works well. We see redemption and madness from the top protagonists in this story, and it’s all believable. It’s not violence for shock value, but serves a purpose in the story.

What they got wrong: For all the issues I have with Roche’s art, this isn’t his best work. Sometimes it feels like it’s channeling the art style from the old Generation 2 comic, while still coming off better than that art horror, so that’s something positive.

Recommendation: If you haven’t been reading the individual issues, the trade is worth at least a read. There are flaws, but otherwise a good miniseries.
