Fraggle Rock #2
Arachia (May 2010)
mutual credits LETTERER: Dave Lanphear MANAGING EDITOR: Tim Beedle CONSULTING EDITORS: Joe LeFavy & Pat Morrissey ACTIVITY PAGE: Katie CookOnce again, I picked up this comic for my Fraggle-loving co-worker, and threw together a review. This issue has three stories, and I’ll review them separately.
The first story is “A Visitor From Outer Space” written by Leigh Dragoon with art by Jake Myler. Doc finally makes an appearance in the comic when he finds a lost cat. Sprocket accidentally chases him into Fraggle Rock, where he come across Wembley. The Fraggles get together hoping to get the “beast” back to “outer space”. It’s a fun little story, and I like the art, even with Doc looking like Dr. Snuggles’ cousin.
“Different Tastes” is the Uncle Traveling Matt story I wanted to see last issue. Adiranna Ambrose writes a tale with Matt coming across a garbage truck. Joanna Estep and I love Matt’s reactions when he gets too close to the truck. Those were always my favorite parts of the show, and it’s represented well here.
The final tale features a recurring character from the show, Convincing John. Neil Klied writes “The Convincing of Convincing John” with Fernando Pinto on art. While the weakest artwise, it’s still some darn good art. We actually get the origin of Convincing John, which I find rather interesting, as he tries to help Wembley get over stage fright. It’s been years since I’ve heard one of John’s motivational speeches in song, and I still remember the tune after all these years. A testament to the original songwriters, or the comic’s writer? You decide.
Overall, this was an improvement over last issue, and last issue was pretty darn good. If you have a Fraggle fan or a kid, and with the show about to return to TV in Discovery Kids’ relaunch as the Hub (plus the whole series and the cartoon on DVD), this is a comic worth getting.
