Darkwing Duck #1
BOOM! Studios (June 2010)
Yeah, for some reason the “BOOM Kids!” logo isn’t on the comic, although the website in the UPC box is for the kids site. I hope they’re not doing what DC and Marvel have done with their kids line.
WRITER: Ian Brill ARTIST: James Silvani COLORIST: Andrew Dalhouse LETTERER: Deron Bennett ASSISTANT EDITOR: Aaron Sparrow DESIGNER: Erika Terriquez COVER “A” (shown): Magic Eye Studios COVER “B” by the internal art team COVER “C” and SDCC Exclusive: Jake Myler with James SilvanyHonestly, guys, how may bloody covers do you need?
It’s been a year since the terror flapped in the night, as Quackwerks’ “Crimebots” have taken over crimefighting in St. Canard. Now Drake Mallard actually works alongside former nemesis Megavolt, and the city has pretty much forgotten his alter ego. Drake has also cut ties with Launchpad (who still keeps the old Thunderquack ready to go). But when the new model arrests Honker for illegal music downloads, will Gosalyn be able to talk him into redoning the costume of Darkwing Duck!
What they got right: Just the fact that the comic exists (yes, I’m a fan) should be enough, but as a bonus, it’s damn good! For once, I’m starting with the art. It’s no surprise that Dalhouse, coming from The Incredibles, would get the colors right, but ad in Silvani’s artwork, and you’d swear they used screen captures from the cartoon! Then Brill comes along, gets the characters spot on, and just puts the icing on the cake.
What they got wrong: Since I have to put something here to maintain my critical street cred, I was kind of hoping we wouldn’t have a “reunion” story, and that DW would still be fighting crime all this time, even if we only lost a year.
Recommendation: Simply put, if your a fan of Darkwing Duck and you haven’t already bought, read, and loved it then you either better be poorer than me or been out of the country for a while. This is the rare occasion I’m slapping five stars all around (in the ComiXology version of this review) and the “must have” tag to a comic. Perfection IS possible!
I’m not overdoing it, am I? 😀

Oh, how I've missed this series.
Tomorrow’s Comic> Muppet Snow White #1

I just bought the comic online yesterday. I can’t wait to read it. 🙂
