Batman Beyond #3 (of 6)
DC Comics (October 2010)
WRITER: Adam Beechen PENCILER: Ryan Benjamin INKER: John Stansci COLORIST: David Baron LETTERER: Travis Lanham EDITOR: Chris Conroy COVER: Dustin Nguyen
After failing to stop “Hush” from killing Calendar Man, Terry and Bruce have a bit of a falling out. A chat with mom and brother, as well as an argument with Dana doesn’t put him in a good mood when he discovers Bruce’s secret project. Meanwhile, “Hush” has given his motivation for attacking the former Bat-foes, and wants to take down the “pretender Batman” Terry as well. He solicits the new Catwoman to help him, and then tries to kill her when he’s done with her. Meanwhile, Terry’s search for the new Hush takes the future-time Batman to former Robin Tim and to another former Robin–Dick Grayson!
What they got right: Hey, we finally got the supporting cast in. The fight scenes are rather well drawn and I like the new characters for this story (although I still would have rather seen Terry’s bad guys rather than Bruce’s). Also, Dick Grayson. Missing from the TV series, and it’s nice to see him here.
What they got wrong: The faces on Terry were bad enough, but his mom, brother, and girlfriend look nothing like the show characters. Mom especially, and Matt looks like a variation of Damien from the regular comics. Terry looks more Asian than Dana does in the club scene. It’s disappointing.
Recommendation: Overall I’m enjoying the story thus far, but I’m really hoping that if this does become a regular series, they put the focus on Terry’s foes and find someone who can draw his supporting cast better.
Tomorrow’s Comic> Darkwing Duck #3, a good comic to come after Batman, wouldn’t you say?

You know something? You are totally right. Where is Terry’s Rogues gallery?
Sure, some of them are just retreads of Batman’s (such as the Slapper Addicts and…well, the less said about Ras in BB continuity, the better *shiver*), but he had some genuinely interesting foes like Payback, Inque, Curare, Blight, and so on.
Come on, I would love to see him go another round with Mad Stan (“BLOW IT UP! BLOW IT ALL UP!” )

I think Blight’s story is done with, and we did have a CAMEO by Spellbinder in the first issue, but otherwise I would love to see those characters instead of “Hush” killing all the old Bat-foes as if they were even a threat at this point. (Maybe Freeze, but this issue assures us that the Joker won’t be making another comeback, at least not through Tim Drake.) And why do we need Catwoman? We have Inque and 10 fulfilling any of the roles Catwoman does.
I also felt the supporting cast scenes were just there for the Beyond fans and I’m hoping Dana isn’t going to break up with Terry. Also, no Max or Terry at school. There is talk of an ongoing after this is over, but I don’t trust the current DC staff to get why the series worked.
