This is something I don’t usually do, but after going through a few more of Freddie Wong’s videos the other day, I came across something that may be a benefit to amateur and independent filmmakers so I thought I’d put it up. Surprisingly, this is not me simply putting up filler.
One of the videos as Freddie’s channel features professional actor Andy Whitfield, who plays the title character in Spartacus: Blood & Sand (which sounds like a video game title to me), Starz’s take on Spartacus. I think, I never really bothered to watch it. All I’ve heard is Lucy Lawless makes out other women in it. Now before you go running off to find those clips (perv) check out this video with Andy and Freddie playing out the video game Time Crisis, and then check the behind-the-scenes footage I’m posting after for the reason I’m posting this at all, being awesome. It’s a look at the editing process and features something that’s true for any media format, including comics.
First the actual video.
So how does a guy on YouTube score a top actor like Whitfield?
In the “how they did it” video that follows, Wong discusses an important step in editing.
BW virtual mentor Jerzy Drozd has discussed on one of his 5000 podcasts (slightly higher number than actual) that sometimes you have to do the same thing with a comic story, where you can thumbnail and even fully draw a page and then drop it when you realize it doesn’t actually help the narrative flow. We often hear about scenes left on the cutting room floor (a virtual “cutting room” these days), and sometimes this is the reason, because it actually hurts the story rather than help.
I do find the making of process interesting, and I think I’ve been thinking about it more now that I’m pursuing storytelling. I thought some of you might find it interesting as well.
