Adventures of the Mask #5
Dark Horse Comics (May 1996)
WRITER: Michael Eury PENCILER: Dev Madan INKER: Ande Parks LETTERER: Matt Webb COVER ARTIST: Bruce Timm DESIGNER: Julie Gassaway CREATOR/CONSULTING EDITOR: Mike Richardson EDITOR: Greg Vest
Stanley takes a fishing trip in North Carolina, but somebody forgot to tell him a few things. For example, there’s a hurricane coming, Pretorius plans to use it to give himself superpowers, and the ghost of Blackbeard would rise from his watery grave to take over Walter. You saw in last night’s Friday Night Fight how that fight went. The Mask expels Walter, who decides not to bash him as a way to say “thanks”, and Stanley just goes home.
What they got right: Now this is a story that would have worked in the cartoon, and also works here. Eury was pretty strong in that department, which is why the series as a whole worked.
What they got wrong: Johnny Paul scares me and he’s not even in this comic.
Recommendation: Still encouraging my readers to find this comic. It’s fun to read.
