Another attempt to land at a soccer football game lands the TARDIS crew in the 9th Century. There, they get caught up in political intrigue when the Viking leader is killed by his own son, who wants to start a war with the people of Wemba’s Lea, one of the Anglo-Saxon areas that hasn’t fallen to invaders and the future home of Wembley Stadium. When Amy is taken by the Vikings, the Doctor and Rory fight to win her back…with a penalty shootout.

What they got right: A one-shot story. That’s rare for this title, and it so works. Lee seems to having fun writing these three and the results show. We also get our history, with the long scarf and another mention of Alfred the Great. Plus it’s a throwback to the old days with a historical piece that doesn’t involve alien invasions, just the actual historical threats.

What they got wrong: Yeah, I’ve got nothing.

Recommendation: Maybe not the best way to introduce yourself to Doctor Who but a great one for fans.

The guardian of time and space, everyone.

Agreed! This issue was totally awesome. I’m very glad Tony Lee is resisting the urge to spin a huge web of continuity porn like he did with his 10th Doctor series.

Exactly. There are some knowing winks, but it’s just good fun. Also, no inbred continuity. My problem with his earlier run wasn’t so much that he included continuity from the series, but that the whole series became a pretzel referring and justifying ITSELF.

I think he’s more constrained by the current series’ cast than he was doing a Companionless (or really, his own companions) series set during the TV specials. And it’s turning out to be a good thing.
